Murara Fishing Camp
Murara camp is a basic yet comfortable self catering fishing camp on the shores of the Zambezi River under stunning trees. The camp easily accommodates 9 people in 3 large bedrooms, each with a fully equiped en suite bathroom as well as a double and single bed. If you would like to sleep more people we are happy to allow our guests to bring their own mattresses and camp out for a reduced daily rate. The camp is located in a communal area, however the camp is secluded from the surrounding community. There are 3 Staff including a cook, two generators, freezer, gas fridge, bed linen and towels provided for your stay.
A large dining & bar area, complete with electric plugs, is perfect for relaxing in the evenings and enjoying your freshly caught fish. Econet cell service is intermittent but roaming signal is available from. There is a gas deep freezer but we recommend that you bring your own ice to last the duration of your stay. The splash pool is a welcome reprieve from the heat of the day, and if you find you have too much ice – throw it in the pool!
There are 3 boats on hand for hire, and although a 4x4 vehicle is recommended to reach the camp, many of our guests have easily brought their own boats. There is a wide variety of fish in the river and you can expect to catch Tigerfish, Bream, Bottlenose, Barbel, Vundu, Chessa, Squeakers, Butter barbell, Electric catfish, Eels and Cornish Jack.
The Area
Acacia species and mopane trees dominate the landscape and the area has all the big game that you'd expect. Game will not be found around camp itself, but a short boat ride upstream will find you in the prime location for game viewing. Buffalo and elephant are very common, and can often be seen grazing on the islands in the middle of the river, or swimming between Zimbabwe and Zambia. In the river, crocodile and hippo are always present, but also look for the large water monitor lizard, or leguvaan.
The area is a paradise for birders with around 350 species of birds being recorded in the valley. By the river you will find many varieties of water-loving birds like pied, giant, woodland, malachite and brown-hooded kingfishers, to name the more common of the species. Similarly, darters, cormorants, egrets and storks are common, and fish eagles are always to be found perching on high branches that overlook the river. Less common residents include ospreys, spoonbills and African skimmers, and it's rich in waders, both resident and migrant.
Summer temperatures in the Zambezi valley average between 32 and 45°c from October – April. The sun can be very harsh and it is advisable to wear a hat and sunblock. The rainy season runs from November to March and Winter is May – September. Days are dry, sunny and cool to warm (20C) while evening temperatures drop sharply to 5C - 10C. Exceptionally cold spells can occur.
From Harare you will travel North on the Mazowe Road and can expect 200km of tar road, then a further 150km of dirt.
